Welcome to the KULT Kreator Experience Podcast.

Successful content creation to build powerful connections. A podcast designed to help passionate experts and entrepreneurs launch a podcasting platform, successfully build a following and become industry leaders.

Hi, I’m Matt and I’m the founder of KULT Media and the host of this podcast.

I’ll be sharing my experience and insights of over 15 years of content creation, and along the way, I’ll be seeking out other KULT Kreators to learn from their wisdom and expertise.

In this, our very first episode, I’m going to share with you a little bit more about me, what the KULT Kreator Experience is and what we’re going to be doing across the series.

So in series one, I’m going to break down podcasting, I’m going to share my processes and I’m going to give you insights into the steps I use to create content.

If this sounds like a journey you’d like to be part of, please follow us on Instagram @kult.media and on your podcasting app of choice.

Right, let’s get into it, a little bit more about me. So I’ve been producing audio content for over 15 years. I started my career as a dubbing mixer. Working primarily in television, I specialised in documentaries, music features and animations. During my career, I became Head of Audio for a West London post-production facility, Rapid Pictures and also gained the role of Head of Audio at VICE Media UK.

In addition to the television, I have worked on incredible branded content across those 15 years, working for huge brands like Nike, Adidas, Desperados, Chanel, just to name a few, and I started working in podcasting in 2015, 2016, and I’ve been a producer, a white label editor and sort of a launch strategy coach.

Throughout my career, I have worked in and headed up teams of incredible professionals, creatives, managers, producers, executives and clients. I have developed workflows to increase productivity, make life easier and solve some complex post-production problems. And in more recent times, I have been media coaching for small businesses, experts and entrepreneurs who want to get their message out to the world but don’t know-how.

Today, all brands and businesses need an online presence, but I believe that presence alone is not enough. Fundamentally, people buy from people, and they do so with emotion. And that’s why purpose and emotion are the keys to success when it comes to creating content to build an audience.

So let’s get into the name of the podcast. KULT is actually an acronym, and it stands for Know, Understand, Like and Trust. And I think these are the fundamentals of any positive interaction and relationship.

And now for the word itself – the KULT. Let’s ignore the bad parts of cults, the crazy people, the manipulation, and the antisocial behaviours. But instead, look at the concept of a cult to build our content.

Cults are built on a purpose and a shared set of objectives and beliefs, and this is the best place to start with any content creation venture.

Then we need a confident leader that can relay that purpose and vision as well as inspire and motivate others. And speaking of others, we need a following, a devoted audience that will support and join the cause.

And finally, we need some rituals, and in creative terms, these could be your brand style or how you create your content, your workflows, and they should be replicable and shareable. And these make you unique.

And then Kreator obviously spelt with a K again because of branding and such. But the creative are you utilizing your expertise, personality and storytelling to create solutions to help others.

And finally, Experience. And this is the use of branding and emotion to make impactful and meaningful content that is memorable, and I think this is important. This is about using emotion to create an impact that is memorable. Without those three things, an experience is easily forgotten and it doesn’t make a difference. But this could also be the experience of you or me as a creative, going from idea all the way through to producing the content and engaging that audience.

So that’s the title of this, The KULT Kreator Experience.

And we have a subtitle or a tagline, and that is “Successful content creation to build powerful connections.” Let me disseminate this a little bit more too.

Successful content creation could be how easy it was to create the content. It could be how many views or likes you get; it could be about your followers or your sales or the emotional connection you have to your content. It could be about the people and the engagement, your content, or it could be even bigger than that, a greater cause.

And then build powerful connections. I use the word ‘build’ because it is not automatic. You might create content, you might love what you’ve created, and it might have been really easy for you to create it, but it takes time. You have to get your hands dirty, be authentic and build meaningful, powerful connections.

Powerful connections could be also a connection for you to your purpose. What is your content about? What story does it tell? Who does it tell it to? Is it your peers? Is it just people in general or is it to a specific network? And it could also be this powerful connection to your work, loving what you do. So that is our tagline: “Successful content creation to build powerful connections.”

Now, when I say content, I mean all content: video, audio, imagery, written. This podcast is going to lean towards podcasting and audio because:

  1. I’m an audio specialist and I’ve been working in audio since I was 14

and B. I do believe that audio has the best accessibility of all the content forms.

You can cook, drive, clean, run, can pretend to work, all while consuming audio content.

And it is also in my opinion, easier to make and cheaper than video, although I do agree that video is the most engaging form of entertainment and YouTube is the second most popular search engine globally. So video is not to be overlooked.

So now we know and understand the podcast, let’s dive into the next nine episodes of this series. Give you a little bit of detail about what we’re looking at and what you can expect.

So, I have a very simple creative process. It’s three steps. They are Coach, Create and then Collaborate. Much like the Listen, Learn, Lead process for leadership, these three steps are about information gathering, taking action and engagement with people.

Each step has three phases, and these phases across the entire process have been present on every successful TV show, film, podcast, and branded content, I have ever worked on. The stuff that flopped and that was hard to work on always missed a phase. They are not to be overlooked.

So let me describe the first step, Coach and the phases within it.

Coaching is asking the right questions to gain insights into the why who and what. As with all cults, we start with the leader, the personal phase of Coach, we look at what makes you, you. There is no one else like you and because of that amazing fact, we look to capitalize on this. We dive into why you want to create, what are your values and how can they be used to the greatest effect and become a KULT Kreator.

I’m going to use an example from airlines: “Put your mask on first before helping others.” That’s what we’re doing in the personal phase of Coach. Let’s find your purpose.

Next, we need to look into your audience. The people phase of Coach gives us clear definitions of who our followers are.

And the final phase of Coach is the product. What can you create to achieve your vision, solve people’s problems and make the world a better place? Now, a problem does not need to be complex or resolve a massive issue. It could be as simple as boredom. You’re seeking to solve someone’s boredom; you need to create something attention-grabbing and entertaining. It’s as simple as that.

Step 2: Create.

Now, this is where most people start, but without doing foundational work in Coach, they can produce content for the wrong reasons, for the wrong people and in the wrong format. And this leads to stress and frustration, and eventually, they stop, and say to everyone, oh, I tried it and it wasn’t for me. Intention and purpose are important for longevity and legacy when creating content.

Create has three phases. These are three phases of How: Pre-production, Production and Post-production.

Pre-production is the planning and preparing for your content, knowing what resources you need and what skills you want to develop.

Production – this is when the big red light comes on and we shout ACTION! Here we discussed the practical skills and the technology used to create content.

And Post-production, the curation and enhancement of your production. This is important because you should be considering your followers’ precious attention and time. Nobody wants to listen to someone think. Edit it.

Collaborate is our last step and this comprises of Publish, Promote and the all-important Profit. This is the where and the when of the process.

Publishing – utilizing your chosen platforms to broadcast your story to the world, making it as easy as possible for people to find you and to continue to engage.

In the Promote phase: you have created an asset to help people. Share it. Don’t be afraid to stand up and direct people towards your work. You know it’s good. They don’t know what they don’t know. Engage with them.

And finally, Profit. Now, this is different for everyone because we have our own ideas of what success looks like. And to be honest, you should come to some sort of revelation about your determinants for success during your personal phase of the process and understand what you want to create for others.

We need to define what is important to you and how we can measure it.

So that, in summary, is my KULT Kreator Experience. I coach, I create, I collaborate.

Every successful production has nine phases: Personal, People, Product, Pre-production, Production, Post-production, Publish and Promote and finally, Profit. And I hope this helps you understand a little bit more about me, the podcast and my creative process.

In the next episode, we are going to start at the end. That’s right, we’re going to talk about the final step of the podcasting process. We’re going to talk about my Profit Pillars of Podcasting because I feel it’s important to understand what can truly be gained from becoming a KULT Kreator before starting.
